Gemstone Info: Carnelian is named after the kornel cherry because of its color. It is part of the chalcedony group of stones. The Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans carved carnelian to many shapes including rings, cameos, and intaglios. Agate stones, which are also chalcedony stones, can be dyed and heated to appear like carnelian.
